Looking back at how I first started learning numerology, I honestly didn’t have anyone who would show me the way and give me some tips and tricks on what to look out for. But just like with most things in life, you learn as you go! And that is exactly what I did. However, I have to say that numerology can be quite a solo journey, just like astrology or any other form of higher spiritual, esoteric knowledge. It is one that you have to discover on your own. This is because numerology is not really accepted by the masses as a tool for self-improvement, and so it can be quite difficult to find people near you who share similar interests in the esoteric world. Nonetheless, I’ve learned a lot along my Astro-numerology journey (and I’m still learning a lot). So, in this post, I will share some key things I have learned, as these may come in handy when you embark on your own journey of self-discovery and personal development using this ancient system.

Let’s start!

The first point may not seem that obvious or important—especially when you’re new to numerology — and yet it is.

Start with the basics i.e., learn astrology

Numerology is all about the study of numbers. So if you can count, i.e. know basic adding and subtracting, then you are one step ahead of the game. But the most important thing is to start with some astrology basics. Honestly, when I embarked on my numerology journey, I already had some Astro knowledge. Once I started studying both sciences simultaneously, it was easier for me to connect the dots. If you’re familiar with my passionate writings on this topic, then you should know by now that I consider both sciences as one family. They both go hand in hand. Obviously, numerology is easier to learn and understand, and astrology is a bit more complex. I just want to stress that if you know the basics of astrology (planets, houses, and zodiac signs) then you’re even three steps ahead of the game of learning and understanding the significance behind the numbers. It will just make your life a lot easier! So, some basic astrology background information may help you tremendously, especially concerning the planets.

In Vedic astrology (my preferred astrology system), for example, planets are very important. It is the belief that they influence all aspects of our human experiences here on Earth, including our behavior and decision-making. Thus, having some knowledge about the planets is key to understanding the basics of numerology and, ultimately, human behavior. Why? Simply because the meaning of the numbers one to nine stems from the natural attributes and qualities of the planets in our celestial universe.

If you are curious to learn more about the meaning of the planets as per Vedic Astrology then click here, as I’ve already written a post about it. Or if you want to learn more about the link between planets, numbers, and human behavioral traits, click here.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter which astrology system (Western/Tropic or Vedic/Indian/Sidereal) you choose to study the planets. Even though I focus more on the nine planets used in Vedic Astrology (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu & Ketu); do what works for you. The most important thing is that you take some time out to learn some astrology. I started off with Western astrology and gradually moved towards the Vedic system because the latter made more sense to me, and I find it more accurate, based on my personal observations and experiences. However, both astrology systems have their own interesting interpretations of the planets, signs, houses, and even transits.

This brings me to my next point.

Choose a numerology system that works for you

Which numerology system is the most accurate: Chaldean or Pythagorean? Well, I believe that they each have their own advantages and disadvantages. The same goes for Western/Tropical versus Indian/Vedic Astrology. Though my preference goes out to Vedic astrology, I still check out Western astrology from time to time, just to get a different perspective. The same goes for numerology.

I prefer and use the Pythagorean numerology system a.k.a. Western numerology because I relate to it more. I have seen how it works for me and in other people’s lives. In addition, I believe (and have seen) that the name on our birth certificate holds more value than the name we use on a daily, such as our nickname—which holds more value in the Chaldean or Indian numerology system.

After trying and testing, I now combine Western (Greek) numerology with basic Vedic (Indian) astrology principles. In other words, I use the nine planets —commonly known in Vedic astrology—as a base for understanding the meaning, energetic vibration, behavioral qualities, and influence of numbers in numerology. Even though I prefer the Pythagorean numerology system, I sometimes refer to the Chaldean one, just to get a different insight and perspective.

So, my second piece of advice is to remember that nothing is set in stone. Try out the different numerology systems and choose one that works for you; one you have tried and tested, researched and observed, one you relate to more and feel the most comfortable with. Do not choose a system just because it is all around you, and everybody else is using it. Don’t follow the herd.

This brings me to my third point.

Focus on experiential learning, i.e. learn from experiences + observations

I believe in experiential learning. I believe that one of the most profound ways of improving your life is by learning from your personal experiences, and discovering and studying yourself through your surroundings, behavioral patterns, and the situations you find yourself in. Okay, I’m also a bit biased because I’m a Sag rising, and us Sags tend to naturally learn from our own experiences as these allow us to grow on a personal and spiritual level.

That said, when I first embarked on my numerology journey, I found most of my information through books (purchased and library-owned), and the internet including blogs and online courses. What I have noticed, after some time of studying this ancient system, is that in order to understand numerology (and see if it works), you need to apply it to your everyday life, and observe your own behavioral patterns (both past and present). It is also very important to study and observe the behavior of people in your direct and indirect environment as well. Because numerology is all about human behavior through numbers. It is through observations that you get to see whether the theories you have learned also apply in your everyday life. So the best way to get some understanding of human behavior is to study, analyze, and examine our own behavioral patterns, and that of others. Just pay careful attention to the energies and people’s actions!

To summarize my third piece of advice, based on my lessons learned; try not to focus too much on the theoretical aspect. Obviously, it is good to know all the calculations and theoretical and philosophical meanings of the numbers, but at the end of the day, it is from our own real-time observations that we learn the most.

Now let’s move on to my fourth key point.

Remain curious in life. Question things, even the art of numerology

I’m a curious type. I always want to know the whys behind everything. It keeps me sharp and broadens my horizons. Even though I’m very passionate about numbers and how they can influence our behavior, I don’t always agree with everything. I have and use my common sense. Thus, logic plays a big part in my interpretation of the numerical energies in combination with certain behavioral patterns.

Plus, with everything I do, I like to keep an open mind and not walk into things blindly. That is why I’ve mentioned in my previous key points that it is very important to try out different systems and to not focus too much on the theory. Instead, do your own observational research. Once you have done your own observations thoroughly, you can draw conclusions and create your own interpretation. Ultimately, it is through trials and errors that we learn.

Also, keep in mind that numerology is an ancient philosophy and teaching, which has been around for thousands of years. Throughout history, it has been adopted by many different cultures who each had their own interpretation which, ultimately, resulted in the creation of different systems. So, my fourth piece of advice is to encourage you to do your research with an open, curious, but critical mind. When you have an open and critical mind, it keeps you fresh and stimulates you to learn, think, and question more. In addition, remember that nothing in life is permanent, except for change. As we as humans grow and evolve, so does our behavior. Thus, it wouldn’t surprise me if someone would create a new system and/or branch of numerology in the future.

And now my last piece of advice.

Don’t become obsessed with numbers, planets, the stars and their energies

I try to find meaning in everything. I can speak from my experience that whenever I get myself into learning something new, I can delve into it way too deeply. So much so that I forget about the time, and what is actually happening in the real world. What I have learned throughout the years is to make sure that I always keep a healthy balance between the world of mysticism and my everyday life. At the end of the day, numerology is just a self-help tool; a profound one. It is one that can help you discover more about yourself and find some direction in life. However, do not let numerology take over your life. Try not to become obsessed about it, and watch out that you don’t justify and confirm everything with numbers, planets, and the stars, and the energies behind them.

I have to admit that numerology is a fun and insightful learning tool, which could get overwhelming at first. However, watch out that you don’t get too carried away with this newfound knowledge or passionate hobby. Because a passion could easily turn into an obsession, and when things become an obsession, it could become unhealthy, toxic, and lead to self-destruction instead of self-help. This could, ultimately, impede your studies, research, and proper observations. And you don’t want that.

So my last advice when embarking on your numerology journey is; enjoy, and have fun exploring the world of numerology, but take occasional breaks whenever you can. Always create a healthy balance between the spiritual and the material world. While studying, continue to live your life and see how things unfold naturally without getting too attached to numbers. Understand that numbers, planets, and the stars are there to guide us, and to work with us, not to control us or to tell us what will happen in the future. Don’t forget, we have some free will too. Ultimately, it is all about how we choose to use the energies to work for us in a positive sense, and not against us.

That said, I hope that these 5 tips may be of help as you learn more about yourself and others using the art and language of numbers.

Thanks for reading!
