Why Thursday In August? – The Full Story Behind My Blog Name

In today’s post I’m going to explain for once and for all(let’s hope)the meaning and reason behind the name of my blog. I’ve been asked this question a bunch of times(on and offline), and even if they don’t ask for it, I bet people still “wonder”.

So why Thursday in August? The short answer to this question can actually be found on my FAQ page, and there’s even a link to my FAQs on my About page(and even somewhere in a post), but I guess no one really reads those pages…. Anyhow, I could spill the beans in one sentence actually, but I’ve decided to create a whole post about it. So if you’re interested in the extensive version of my blog name story, read on!

Before I even created my blog in November 2015 and secured my domain name, I wanted to make sure that the chosen name would be in alignment with who I am and not just what I like. Because my plan for this blog was and still is, to keep it for the rest of my life. And obviously my interests and thoughts could change as I get older….So I thought this name had to be one that I WOULD NOT REGRET!

Since I’m into Astrology(my sun sign is Leo with birth month August) and I’m a Summer type-of-girl, I wanted to create a blog name around that. I first came up with different keywords like Summer, August, afternoon(because I was born in the afternoon), Thursday(day I was born), and even Leo.  These keywords ended up in different potential names like:

  •  “Thursday Afternoon” (which happens to be the album name of a British musician, and the name of a creative agency somewhere in Australia or Zealand..not sure anymore – The domain name was taken)
  • “August Sun” (which happens to be an award-winning international Sri Lankan movie – The domain name was taken also)
  • “Summer Thursday” (the first thing Google mentioned was the name of an apparently popular song called “Like a Summer Thursday”)

Then with the help of some website name generator(I forgot which one) I ended up with “A Thursday In August”, because I was born on a Thursday in August. Still I felt that something just didn’t feel right. The name was a bit too long(for a domain), and the sound was just off.

So what happened next? Remember  when Mark Zuckerberg was told/advised to drop the “The”(before Facebook)? At least, that’s what I understood from Justin Timberlake’s character in The Social Network ….. And just like that, I decided to drop the “A” and my blog name “Thursday in August” was born! {Clearly my blog can’t be compared to a social media network, but you get the point.} – Nonetheless, I bought the domain name and the rest is history.

Now you know the story behind my blog name. The meaning is actually pretty simple, but the most important thing is that my blog name represents me, who I am, what I believe in and what I stand for. Obviously I didn’t have to write a whole post about it, but it’s my blog and I just felt like writing(which is good for my soul). 😉

So if you’re a blogger, what’s the story behind your blog name?  Let me know in the comment section below. xo – Jey.

    1. Thank you so much. Poppy & Ivy are cool names. And it’s great to use your daughters’ names as the name of your business as well, because just like your children, your business is somehow your baby as well and means a lot to you. xoxo

  2. Jey, this is such a cool story! I, too, was wondering behind the name. It is so unique and catchy. To be honest, it is one of the best blog names I think I have ever come across!

I love the story behind it too. I’m a Sag and get along very well with Leos, so it’s no shock I like you and your blog so much 🙂

    1. That’s so nice of you to say Charlotte. Very much appreciated!Best comment of the day!🤗🤗🤗🤗I’m happy now.because it took me quite a while to come up with a name for the blog. And my birth day wasn’t that obvious, but when you think of it, it is. Yes, you are right, Sags and Leos get along very well indeed!! We have similar interests and outlook on life :). xo, Jey 🌸🌹🌼🌺

  3. PS – Oops! I meant to add this to my first reply. I actually recently changed my blog’s name. Originally, when I started it (in November 2015 too!) it was called Girly Geek Girl, because my focus is on both feminine things and nerdy things. However, when I rebranded it in December 2016, I changed the name to Mosaicca to make it more mature. I made up the word “mosaicca” based on the art form mosaics. 🙂
